President's Report

Happy Spring everyone, and welcome to what promises to be a great season at the Dunany Country Club. I have the pleasure of working with a fantastic team on the Board of Directors, and we have been busy during the offseason getting everything ready for the upcoming season. As you will be able to see from this year’s fixture card, we have another busy calendar full of golf and social events coming up in 2024. Soon the ice will come off the lakes and our beautiful golf course will emerge from beneath the most recent snowfall. After a long (but very green) winter, I cannot wait to get back on the course and see the members of our community in person.

I want to thank all the board members for their hard work over the past year. Fortunately, most of our directors have agreed to continue serving on the board in some capacity in 2024. Jamie Armstrong will be taking a step back from the board of directors after several years and two stints on the board; Thank you Jamie for all your hard work over the years, and we will see you back at the table soon. Dianne Burk has agreed to step forward as President for the next two years, and we have all the confidence in the world in her ability to take this club to the next level after several successful years as Social Director. Cheryl Glionna will be replacing Dianne as chair of the Social Committee this year, and we are all looking forward to seeing what she has in store for the club. As Chris Jackson has agreed to take on the role of Vice President, Paul Logothetis will be taking over as Communications Director. Finally, after a decade of service on the board, Pierre Demers will be departing our group as his tenure as past president comes to an end. I would like to thank Pierre for all his incredible work over the years, and for providing a stellar example of professionalism and competency during his time on the board. We are also pleased to announce that he has agreed to continue as Operations Manager for the club. Pierre works tirelessly at the club to keep things running smoothly and we are truly lucky to have him.

The spirit of volunteerism is vital to the success of our community, and if you have not had the chance to volunteer your time at a DCC event, please try to get involved this season. Many hands make light work! Our club continues to be in a solid financial position. However, due to rising operating costs, the board has approved a modest 3% increase in dues for 2024. Please see the Treasurer’s report below for more details. Thanks in no small part to the efforts of Chris Hart, Rob Haldimand, and the rest of the crew, the course was in excellent shape last year. We are all looking forward to seeing how things look at the start of the season. Finally, to anyone interested in joining the board of directors or simply learning about how the club is governed, please reach out to myself or any of our other directors.

This year’s AGM will be held virtually on Saturday May 4th, at 10 AM, and information about how to connect will be distributed shortly.

See you on the course!

Treasurer's Report

This report covers fiscal 2023, which saw a return to normal operations and social activities after the celebrations that marked our 100th anniversary.  In general terms, 2023 was another good year for the Club, with social activities remaining strong and the Club making investments in course maintenance equipment.  This past year we also updated our accounting system, moving from Sage to Quickbooks.  While this caused additional stress on the accounting staff, Quickbooks will better integrate with Chronogolf.  My thanks once again go to Stephanie Logothetis for all her efforts.

Income Statement

From a financial perspective, the total revenue generated by the Club was $398.6 K, which includes the amortization of the Centennial Fund of revenue of $41.4 K.  When the effects of the Centennial project are removed, the amount of revenue for 2023 was $357.1 K.  This is $51.4 K ahead of our budget of $305.67 K and slightly behind of the prior year actual revenue of $362.5 K.  Annual Dues and Golf Cart rentals were in line with budget, while Green Fees were ahead of both prior year and budget.  This increase is due in part to the income that we recognized related to unused tickets.  It is customary to book a portion of unused tickets to Green Fees and a portion to Social Events.  The Club also benefitted from government support of $10 K.  This is related to the forgiveness of a portion of our COVID loan of $40K.

Revenue from Social events totaled $103.9 K and a resulted in a net contribution, once expenses are deducted, of $49.6 K.  This contribution is $26.9 K greater than the budget of $22.7 K and $15.6 K higher than prior year.  Part of the increase year over year is related to the aforementioned unused tickets, which we did not do in 2022.  Course maintenance was $174.3 K, less than the budget of $190.0 K due primarily to a vacancy in staffing.  Depreciation has increased with the acquisition of the new equipment under a new Capital Lease.  Admin expenses came in higher than budget as a result of an increase in our Bad Debt expense, an increase in Interest expense and the addition of the Operations Manager.  The Bad debt expense is a result of a number of members who chose to resign, but after the invoicing had been issued.  Interest expense has increased with the addition of the capital lease for the course maintenance equipment.

For the perspective of the bottom line, this year’s net income was $27.6 K, slightly higher than last year.  Once the revenue effect of the Centennial Fund is removed, the deficit was $13.9 K, exactly what had been budgeted.  Last year (2022) the deficit was $15.3 K when adjusted for the Centennial Fund Revenue.  Despite being in a deficit position, the Club was in a cash flow positive position when the effects of non-cash charges such as depreciation are considered; the cash balance of the Club remains strong.  Nonetheless, continued deficits could make investing in the course a challenge.

Balance Sheet

Our Club continues to benefit from a strong balance sheet.  We had $250K in cash and term deposits at December 31, 2023.  Accounts receivable are lower than prior year, due to the allowance for doubtful accounts being higher than prior year.  This allowance is higher than usual as we again had members decide to let their membership lapse after they had been billed. To the Club’s benefit, using Chronogolf to track members’ accounts has allowed us more carefully track member spending and balances owing.  The QST/GST receivable includes the amount related to the purchase of the maintenance equipment so it is higher than prior year.  Prepaid expenses are related to normal annual charges that are paid in advance, such as insurance and property taxes.  Building and equipment show the increase related to the acquisition (under a capital lease) of the new course maintenance equipment.

Liabilities include an amount for QST/GST payable which is offset by the receivable amount.   This amount represents an amount related to filing annually, rather than our normal quarterly filing. The Centennial Fund has decreased in line with the amortization amount that was brought into revenue.  Deferred Revenue has decreased because of the Credit Tickets that have been brought into revenue. The increase in the balance of the Capital Lease reflects the addition of the lease related to maintenance equipment.  The Club has repaid the Government Canada Emergency Business Account interest-free loan of $40,000 that was offered in 2020, taking advantage of the forgiveness of $10,000.

From a financial perspective, the challenges currently facing the club fall into two categories: maintaining operations during a period of continuing inflation and investing in improvements to our maintenance facilities.  Increasing costs have resulted in a slight increase to our annual dues.  In general, they will increase by 3%, but will remain less than $1,000 for regular members when including the Tickets (credit books) and taxes.

We have invested in maintenance equipment, but the state of the maintenance buildings along the first hole needs to be addressed.  We have an ad hoc committee reviewing solutions that will meet the needs of our grounds crew and considering different options of financing the same.

Club Captain's Report

As another golf season in Dunany approaches, I am very excited to be working with the amazing Match & Handicap Committee for another year. The Committee is a team of dedicated and hardworking members who all love the game of golf, and of course Dunany, and donate much of their time in order to make the season as enjoyable as possible for everyone.

Here are each of the members and their roles on the Committee:

Club Captain - Carl Demers

Assistant Club Captain - Chantal Robichaud

Ladies Captain - Bonnie Curtin

Junior Captain - Genevieve Roy

Members at large - Mike Cockhill, Paul McLeod, Tracy Wightman

I wanted to first thank them all for all their hard work and help with regards to the Club Championship format survey that was sent out this past winter. I also wanted to thank everyone for taking the time to complete the survey and providing us with their feedback.  Based on the results of the survey, the Club Championships have been reworked somewhat, and we look forward to seeing you all out there competing!

Also, I am very happy to have Peter Wright return once again to run the weekly Men's Days.

Stay tuned for more details regarding the specific golf events and tournaments in the weekly Captain's Newsletters that will continue this year.

I look forward to another wonderful golf season and seeing you all out there on the course!

Greens Report

Happy spring to all and I hope everyone had a healthy and enjoyable winter!

The 2024 golf season is just around the corner and I am very excited to see how the course will continue to develop and improve under the leadership of our Golf Course Superintendent, Chris Hart and his team.  Chris and the team have continually improved the course conditions and I expect this year will be no exception!

We invested some funds last October into some tree thinning work on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th holes in order to improve air circulation (growing conditions) for the greens on these holes. A couple of benefits from this project are improved views of our beautiful course from different vantage points and also helping improve speed of play as errant shots should be easier to find and allow for simpler recovery shots back to the fairway!

Last fall we also took delivery of a new (to us) dedicated fairway unit and rough mower. After Rob Haldimand completed the first few cuts on the fairways, the quality of the playing surface was like nothing I have ever seen at DCC in my 45+ years! I hope you all enjoy it as much as I think you will!

This year we are planning on continuing our progress on a new maintenance garage with the objective of providing our course maintenance team proper equipment maintenance and storage facilities which will in turn prolong the useful lifespan of our equipment. The new facility will provide a lunch/locker room as well as a proper office for Chris. The heart of any golf course is the maintenance facility and ours will be designed to last the Club for decades to come. This investment is vital to the continuing success of our course maintenance operation and our New Maintenance Garage committee consisting of Tom Lowe, Alex Sandahl, myself and Chris Hart are dedicated to seeing this project through!

Green Day (Spring Cleanup) is planned for the 19th of May at 1:00pm, so please keep that in mind and come out to help us clean up around the Starter Shack, the DCC garden along Dunany Road and clubhouse area and gardens. Don’t forget to bring a rake, work gloves and whatever else you can think you might need. Look forward to seeing you there! It’s a great way to help out the crew, volunteer for your club and reconnect with your fellow members after the winter hiatus.

Please don’t hesitate to e-mail me with any thoughts, ideas or concerns.

We can’t wait to see the course back in action in another month or so.

Ladies Branch Report

Although it still looks like winter in Dunany, I’m sure the remaining snow will soon be washed away, and Dunany Country Club will be welcoming us all back. The Ladies Branch executive is looking forward to seeing everyone taking part in the many activities we have planned. Before you know it, the gardeners will be planting the beds, hanging baskets, flower boxes and the Tee Box planters.  Bridge will be starting again, and the Cocktail Party conveners and Quilt Raffle organizers will be looking for volunteers. Save the date — July 17th — for the Ladies Invitational Golf Tournament, as tickets are always in demand as soon as they go on sale! Last but not least, I look forward to seeing as many of you as can attend at the Clubhouse or through Zoom, on June 15th at 10:30 AM for the Opening Meeting of the Ladies Branch!

Junior Golf

Welcome to all our junior golfers — we’re so excited for this year and all the golf to be played.  The DCC Junior Program creates strong bonds and memories for the whole family.

Events: The DCC fixture card will be posted to the Website shortly and will continue to be updated, so please check in for the latest schedule of planned events.

Here is a summary of some key events for you to put in your calendar right away:

  • Monday Junior Golf Lessons:  We are looking for a junior pro for this year.  If we cannot find a professional, we will be asking for volunteers from our pool of skillful and dedicated DCC members, as we have in the past.

  • Tuesday Junior Golf:  Co-Captains Genevieve Roy and Stephanie Logothetis will be organizing the fun this summer. There are weekly games, tournaments and challenges all summer leading up to the Junior Club Championship, which will be held on August 12th & 13th.  We are always looking for walkers to help with Tuesdays, tournaments, and the club championship.  If you are willing to help us shape the next generation of golfers, please let me know.

  • Tuesday Sports Night: Scott Laekas and Paul Logothetis will return with the classics and some new twists throughout the summer to keep our kids active (soccer baseball, flag football etc.… and of course the always popular “capture the flag”).

  • Thursday Movie Nights (for all ages) and Thursday Club Night (reserved for kids aged 13 to 16): These events will remain on the calendar; however, we need volunteers to run them.

  • Family Field Day takes places on August 5th with Rob and Carla Campbell organizing this year; they are looking for volunteers to help out.

Communication: We will be moving to a platform called Team Snap this summer for ease of communication with everyone.  This will be the main communication channel and will include all events for juniors. It includes a schedule of all events (for you to communicate your junior's attendance to events), a parent chat for quick questions/responses, etc. This app is user-friendly and is used by many sporting organisations with great success. More on Team Snap at a later date.

Please request to join the Dunany Country Club Junior Program Facebook group to receive and share news throughout the summer.

Recruiting: If you know of a young person (non-member) interested in golf, please contact me to discuss the sponsorship program.

Volunteering: Many hands make light work. We ask that all parents volunteer and support our juniors as they are the future. We will be circulating a sign-up sheet shortly for you to sign up to at least one event and to allow us to have line of sight of what we can and can't run.

Employment Opportunities for Juniors: We have many opportunities for kids to volunteer and make pocket money (caddying, babysitting, etc.).  Please let me know if your child is interested.

I look forward to speaking with all of you and please contact me with any ideas or concerns.  We are always looking for new and innovative ways of getting our kids excited about golf and connected to the community.

Members' Volunteer Responsibilities:

Our Club relies on member participation to host our social events. Without your volunteer efforts, we cannot bring you a full summer slate of such wonderful gatherings! Each member (including our juniors!) should strive to volunteer at a minimum of two social events per season. It’s an opportunity to connect with our members, build friendships, and contribute to our club culture. Watch for opportunities on event sign-up sheets or email us.

We look forward to seeing you at the Clubhouse, and out on the course, this summer!

The Clubhouse Bar comes under new volunteer management this year!  Members Laurie Cruise and Bill Holley have stepped-up to assemble and lead the team that will welcome us at our favourite watering hole.

Keep our Community Safe:  Dunany is all about community and having a good time.  Having a great Summer includes keeping our family, friends and roads safe! As you mark our exciting events in your calendars, if you plan to drink, don't forget to also plan a ride home. Sharing designated driving responsibilities amongst family and friends is always a responsible choice and will help to keep our roads, and us all safe and sound.

Communications Report

It’s been a wonderful couple of years handling communications for DCC, and as I step into a new role on the board, I’m grateful to the eminently qualified Paul Logothetis for taking over the task of keeping members informed and entertained.

You’ll have noticed that our weekly communications have been issued on both English and French during the past season.  Shortly, our Website will be relaunched in a fully bilingual format, as well.  Applause for social member Julie Huguet, who worked tirelessly to bring our French communications up to scratch, and for our Webmaster, Andrea Minty, for her dedication and long hours.

In order to continue the high standards of communication at DCC, we need you!  If you have excellent French language skills, and are familiar with writing and editing, why not volunteer to work with our Communications team to help make our weekly communications the best they can be?  Send us a note if you think you can help!

Thanks, and hit ‘em straight!
