From the President

Another golf season has wrapped, and I want to thank each and every one of you for making our Club such an extraordinary community. Whether on the course, competing in tournaments, enjoying social events, or volunteering your time, your enthusiasm and involvement define the spirit of the Dunany Country Club.

This season certainly brought its share of challenges on the golf course, but our Greens Committee and the on-course crew responded valiantly to ensure playing conditions trended in the right direction as the season progressed, with slick putting greens adding that extra spice come the Club Championship. Chris Hart and his crew should be commended alongside Alan Morton, who deserves special mention as he steps away as Greens Chair. Alan’s invaluable professional expertise, leadership and deep knowledge of DCC were essential in guiding us during the past eight transformative years.

Taking over for Alan is Mike Cockhill, whose passion for the course, keen eye for detail and process expertise will ensure strong stewardship. Mike is already collaborating with Chris on strategies for the 2025 season.

Around the course, our volunteers completed important landscape upgrades such as the beautification of the front entrance that included new railing fence, stone borders and plants, plus the addition of new gravel for the driveway and upper parking lot, which has been cleared out to accommodate more cars. Peggy Carroll and Dorothy Rekman are deservedly stepping away after three years of service designing, installing, and maintaining the clubhouse gardens.

On the environment front, our water lines were potable all summer safe for one cautionary shutdown and the Abrinord Agreement for safeguarding the 8th hole eco zone was renewed.

Our Junior program – with 38 kids enrolled – continued to play a key role in the present while we look ahead to their future. Many of our members volunteered to teach golf lessons and you may have noticed some teens working at clubhouse events throughout the season, getting a taste of what the club and its social benefits are all about.

It is also important to note the outstanding work of Lynn Palmer leading the Memorial Chair Project, which saw all 12 chairs purchased and sitting proudly in front of the clubhouse overlooking the 9th green. Members also responded positively to the initiative to provide food and snacks in the Starter Shack this summer.

With new members already set to join in 2025, we have created a DCC Ambassadors Program and New Members Handbook to support their amalgamation, providing guidance to ensure they benefit from all the thrills DCC offers. The club is in sound financial shape with a sound budget.

Looking ahead, your Board is excited to focus on developing a comprehensive 5-year plan to prioritize enhancements to improve members' overall experience. As part of this initiative, please look out for a Member Satisfaction Survey that will be sent separately in the coming days. The survey will be your opportunity to share your insights and ideas, which will play a critical role in shaping the long-term vision for DCC.

I would like to take a moment to acknowledge our incredible volunteers, all 160 volunteers of them! Your dedication and generosity exemplify why our Club has flourished for over a century. These include our Board of Directors, whose time, effort, and dedication behind the scenes have been instrumental in our continued success. Thank you for your commitment to keeping our club thriving.

A special thanks goes to Jean MacGibbon, who has retired as Ladies Committee Chair. Jean’s steady guidance and thoughtful leadership have been instrumental in this role. We are delighted to welcome Estelle Willard as the incoming Ladies’ Committee Chair. Estelle is well known in the community for her dedication to the game, her warm and welcoming presence and her organizational competence and we look forward to Estelle's contributions.

Finally, I thank you all for an incredible season and for your continued support of our Dunany Country Club. I look forward to seeing all of you in the new year as we work together to make our club even better.

Sincerely,

Dianne Burk, President

Financial Report

The financial health of the Club is strong. Our projection to year-end indicates similar financial results to 2023, when we operated with a surplus.  This is great news considering we had budgeted for a small operating deficit. It is important to note we have closed the current season with sufficient cash resources.  You can expect more details in the Spring newsletter since the books on 2024 will have closed. The team will review the Club’s financial guidelines to ensure they reflect the Club’s current financial environment.

As a housekeeping item, please ensure that your account is paid in full as soon as possible.

Have a great winter!

Alex Sandahl, Treasurer

From the Ladies Committee

We expect next season to be another wonderful year like 2024, which was marked by great turnouts for the Ladies Invitational, the Ladies Cocktail Party and the quilt, plus the regular bridge playing sessions. Thank you to all our volunteers – you are the backbone of the Ladies Committee activities.

Looking ahead to 2025, Jean Sutherland will head up the quilt making team. There will be no square kits distributed, instead, Jean will create a ready to quilt blanket in time for the start of the summer. More details will follow in the new year, when we will be looking for volunteers to participate in quilting bees to finish it off.

We are thankful to Kathy Laidley, Diane Glionna and Maureen Cameron for volunteering to host the Ladies Cocktail Party next July.

The Ladies Invitational Day, meanwhile, is being hosted by members who live in the surrounding areas of Dunany, not on Clear, Boyd, Black or Curran lakes (the “Other Lakes” or “Fifth Lake”?). More details to come.

On behalf of the Ladies Committee Executive, we wish you all a safe and happy winter season.  â€‹

From the Social Committee

Social events were a smashing success, mostly filled to capacity all summer long from the opening Directors Dinner to the Championship Dinner and all of the events in-between, including the Mike Roy Memorial golf and dinner which hosted over 150 members. From our annual New Members Cocktail to the Music Fest to our year-end prize giving and corn boil (where we served 200 hamburgers, 200 hotdogs and 220 corns on the cob!) only a community effort brought all of this together!

And let’s not forget the weekly 5-a-7s, which were a tremendous success, featuring a wide variety of musical acts and delicious culinary options. Bar managers Laurie Cruise and Bill Holley deserve major props for leading a bartending team of 30+ to ensure the success of our social events; a tip of the cap to them both.

And a shout out to social committee members Sarah Armstrong and Audrée Bissonnette for their incredible work behind the scenes elevating our promotional efforts this year and to all of you who helped plan and manage social events and all the minutia that can come with it, from expenses to organization to setting up. Finally, having the Juniors involved at our events – serving meals and cleaning up – was encouraging and allowed the next generations a glimpse into our social events and the great memories they can create.

Cheryl Glionna, Social Director

From the Communications Director

I hope the weekly bulletins and general communications have been informative and eased your connection to the DCC membership. Please feel free to drop me a line with any comments and – during the busy summer months – with any news that our membership should be made aware of. As mentioned above, please keep an eye out for the Member Satisfaction Survey and remember to volunteer whenever you can – its essential to making Dunany what it is. Have a great holiday season.
